2:51 pm - IMPORTANT: Read This
I don't normally go all political here, but this time I must.

On Sunday and Monday, ABC is planning on broadcasting a show called "Path to 9/11", which is supposedly based on the report of the 9/11 Commission. Unfortunately, this show has been written and produced by an extreme rightwing ideologue. It is an attempt to place blame on the Clinton administration and away from the Bush administration.

The complete film has been made available for review and screening only to rightwing media figures such as Rush Limbaugh. Despite requests from President Clinton himself (among others depicted in the film), no copy has been made available for them to review for accuracy. Despite this, several scenes have been seen and shown to be inaccurate or even entirely at odds with the facts; in one case Madeline Albright has said that the events depicted in the film are in fact the direct opposite of what actually occurred.

Many politicians, including many U.S. senators, have written a letter of protest to ABC to ask that they not broadcast such biased claptrap. A group of professional historians from major universities across the nation has written a similar letter to ABC.

In an election season, broadcasting partisan political propaganda is extremely wrong, and ABC needs to stop this NOW. To be entirely honest, I don't very much like the Bush administration, but I would have the exact same issue with a broadcast of anything purporting to be fact biasing against the Bush administration as well. A critical part of any democracy is an informed populace, and partisan propaganda, towards ANY direction, goes against the idea of an informed populace, and should be seen as a great threat to our democracy.

More information can be found at mediamatters.org, as well as thinkprogress.org; they both have petitions available to protest to ABC and Disney (ABC's parent company) about this clear abuse of their public trust.

In addition, those of you who are local to Seattle should contact our local ABC affiliate, KOMO TV, to express your displeasure (if you so feel). Their website is www.komotv.com.

If they choose to broadcast this partisan political crap in an election season, I will be boycotting ABC as well as Disney; I would encourage others to investigate the issue, and if they feel strongly about this as I do, to do the same.

12:44 pm - Welcome change
Ah, here's a welcome change; a year after Katrina, Bush has finally decided to start appointing people to co positions that they have personal experience with. Clay Aiken is being nominated to the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities.

I swear, some days the humor just writes itself.

10:42 pm - Stupid, stupid ads
One of my favorite ads right now is this ad for some drug, I don't know which, but they have in the ad, this little warning (paraphrasing): "Tell your doctor if you suffer from liver failure, kidney transplant, or advanced HIV disease." WHAT? Shouldn't your doctor already know about that, really, BEFORE you start asking for some lifestyle drug? Maybe I'm just crazy, but somehow, I think before you start asking your doctor for some drug to fix your asthma or irritable bladder, you should maybe let them know if you suffer from advanced HIV?

12:19 am - Things looking up
Yes, things definitely seem like they're looking up right now. Truly wonderful things have been happening in my life recently, one thing in particular. I feel very... revitalized (and tired at the same time, but it's a good tired).

5:45 pm - Absolutely great news
Fantastic news today; the FDA finally approved the HPV vaccine. In case you're not in the know on this one, HPV is the virus that causes the vast majority of cervical cancer cases, which kills hundreds of thousands of women every year. A few years back, some scientists came up with a vaccine that, in clinical tests, showed to be up to 100% effective at preventing infection. But it was opposed by the religious nuts in the current administration because it was considered to be somehow not consistent with their insane "abstinence only" policy.

Finally, science and sense won out. Thank heavens. The religious right was willing to kill thousands of women every year because the cure wasn't consistent with their insane sexual philosophy. How very "Christian" of them.

Okay, this is by far the most amusing little thing I've found on the web in a long, long time. Truly, truly bizarre, too. Everyone REALLY should check this out:

5:32 pm - Hilarious...
Just read this in the latest Comics Journal, and I absolutely loved this quote:

"Cartooning is the art of expressing emotional states visually; Jack Kirby expresses emotions nobody has had yet."

I'm cracking up again just rereading it...

9:20 pm - Really, REALLY bad summarization
Okay, this is hilarious; this is perhaps the worst summarization ever... I can't figure out how to put a picture in, so here's a link, but I'd recommend it to everyone to check it out quickly (yes, it's work-safe, with the exception of the uncontrollable laughter you'll be experiencing...).

9:32 pm - Very very disturbing
This is very, very disturbing. Fundamentally, there is this basic point; on September 11, Osama bin Laden and his cronies killed 2,986 Americans. George Bush pushed this country into unjustified war with Iraq. There were no WMDs. Intelligence was being fixed around the facts. As of this date, 3,166 Americans have died in Iraq, in an unnecessary, unprovoked war.

How incredibly disturbing is it that we can now CLEARLY see from the sheer numbers that the more destructive and worse person TO AMERICA is the leader of this country? (And no, don't give me the crap about "Bush thought he was doing the right thing"; so did bin Laden. Horrifying and unnecessary destruction of American lives is just what it is.)

(As an even more disturbing aside, consider that this does not even BEGIN to consider the number of Iraqi civilians (and military personnel) killed; nor does it consider the amount of damage done to the American economy by the Iraq war (now estimated to likely cost over 1 TRILLION dollars eventually to America; nor does it consider the squandering of international goodwill towards America.)

I have no idea how anyone could even CONSIDER these facts and not be incensed unto mind-numbing rage.

current mood: incensed

10:17 am - Now THAT's Unexpected...
Wow, this is totally out of the blue... To summarize, it appears that Mexico is on the verge of legalizing posession and use of an extremely wide variety of recreational drugs. I had no idea this was a point of consideration at all.

I'm really curious as to what effects this may have overall; as expected, U.S. drug war proponents are predicting doom, but I'm curious to see what the actual effects are going to be. I've always been curious as to what the ACTUAL effects of widescale legalization would be; I *do* think that the "conventional wisdom" that addiction will skyrocket is wrong; I tend to believe that the "demand" side of the recreational drug trade is particularly resistant to "supply" effects, and that it's more stable than the "conventional wisdom" would indicate. (Essentially, I have a fair amount of faith in human nature; I believe that people have more distinct reasons for not doing drugs than "don't have any".)

Looks like we'll get to see.

1:11 pm - Captain Fuckwad's Hypocrisy
Oh, this is just brilliant. The sub-moron we have now as president has recently been trying to boost his shitty approval ratings in the same manner as all despots; by flag-waving and blaming minorities; in this case, by coming out against the idea of the national anthem being sung in Spanish. Then this came out...

Bush recently came out against singing "the Star-Spangled Banner" in Spanish, saying it should be sung only in English. Yet, he had it sung in Spanish AT HIS OWN INAUGURAL. What a total and absolute hypocritical fuckwad.

11:00 pm - Justice League Unlimited
Wow. Just... wow. I can not BELIEVE how bloody good that show is. Tonight's new episode dealt with a whole rash of issues of love, honor, fate, destiny, choice, betrayal, respect, and the demons within. Wonderful treatment of the characters, as well. Surprisingly, it's one of the best shows on TV now.

They recently put out the first season on DVD, and it's very clear that they were really just trying to get their feet during the first season; it's overall MUCH weaker than later episodes. They even seem to acknowledge it in the creator commentary. I think the big difference is that after the first season, they realized that their target audience really wasn't kids; they decided to go with much more complex and involving plotlines and stories while still keeping it acceptable for kids. While it's perfectly acceptable for kids, there are some very strong subplots involving romance, jealousy, and honor that I really don't think that kids can get. It's in the same vein of all good entertainment for children; it's fine work for kids, but it can be understood on a much deeper and more complicated level when enjoyed by adults because of the complexity of the characters.
